Handmade Upholstered Bench, Spiral Cone Legs, 59″

59″ Length, 19-1/2″ Width, 20-1/4″ Height A husband and wife team, Everything here is made of our own design, with our own hands, in our home shop. Not at all satisfied with the mass of material required by a solid wood bench, I decided to make them instead as stressed skin panels, A stressed skin panel is a ridiculously efficient shape, where the structural material is only placed where it is in either compression or tension. Think surfboard, but with birch plywood for the outer skin instead of fiberglass. I can’t begin to tell how pleased I am with the result, these things are crazy strong, note the photo of an un-upholstered bench with over a thousand pounds of gravel stacked on top of it! Furthermore the substantial saving in weight is all in the bench top, giving the bench a lower center of gravity, always a nice thing. We keep one at the foot of our bed that gets pressed into service at the dining table every saturday night. And Those Legs! Supported by a set of four 16″ angled Spiral Cone Legs. The legs are made of 1/4″ cold steel round bar, formed and welded into a spiral cone, ending at a 1-1/2″ diameter solid steel ball, much stronger than a hairpin leg. The bolt pattern for mounting the legs to these benches, matches every stock height leg we make, and are 1/4-20 machine threads in a blind steel hole, so there’s no guesswork, I even include a #3 phillips screw driver which is the only tool needed.
